Apps Like ReelShort: 5 Alternatives Compared by What They Cost
- There are five credible alternatives. NetShort is the cheapest at $99.99 a year against ReelShort's $199.99 — literally half the price for the same unlimited model.
- DramaBox is the cheapest per finished series: about $9.99 for a week covers as many series as you can watch, against roughly $25–45 in ReelShort coins for one series.
- The other three — ShortMax, GoodShort and StardustTV — all price their annual pass at $149.99, so they save against ReelShort but by much less.
- Why people leave ReelShort is usually one of three things: the price, the coin-first pricing, or wanting English-language originals. Only some alternatives solve each one.
- If your actual reason is English audio, none of these help — ReelShort is the only app here that films its own English-language originals. The rest dub imports.
- One caveat: we tested all six on Android in October 2026. Prices rotate, and two of the six hide their renewal price in the app.
Every figure on this page comes from one hands-on session per app, not from a review site. The setup was identical throughout:
- Environment — Android in BlueStacks, real Google Play billing, signed into a US Google Play account so prices rendered in dollars. No VPN region-switching during the pricing pass.
- Deriving the per-episode price — every app prices locked episodes in coins, not dollars. We read the coin cost per episode from the unlock screen, then divided by the coins-per-dollar of a given pack. That is why the same episode shows two prices on our tables: $0.50 is the entry pack, and the lower figure is what the largest pack works out to. Both are real, and which one applies depends on the pack you buy.
- Renewal, not intro — where an app offers a discounted first period, we report the renewal price separately. Intro offers in this category carry countdown timers and rotate by day and by account, so they are treated as marketing, not as the price.
- Confirmed against the store sheet — for every subscription we cross-checked the renewal figure against the Google Play subscription sheet, which is the number that actually reaches the card. Where the in-app text disagreed with the sheet, we report the sheet.
Prices checked in-app on 2026-10-09 · 6 apps in the same session.
Known limits of this method — three things we could not control, stated so you can weigh the numbers: introductory offers rotate daily; DramaBox prices by IP region rather than by account, so a different connection can quote a different currency; and neither app publishes its free/paid boundary, so that figure varies by series and is a measured sample rather than a rule.
Why people leave ReelShort
ReelShort is the biggest app in the category and the one most people start with. It is also the most expensive of the six we tested, and its default purchase shape works against you in a way the others do not.
But “apps like ReelShort” is not really one question. People leave for three different reasons, and no single alternative solves all three:
The annual price hurts. ReelShort’s yearly pass is $199.99 — the highest of the six we measured. Fixable: NetShort does the same thing for $99.99.
Pay-per-episode feels expensive. ReelShort sells coins by default, so finishing one series costs roughly $25–45. Fixable: DramaBox is subscription-first and covers it in one week.
The content is not what you wanted. ReelShort films its own English-language originals; almost everything else in the category is dubbed. Not fixable by moving to another app.
If your reason is number three, moving saves you money and gives you worse audio at the same time. That is a bad trade, and it is the most common mistake in this category.
The annual price gap
This is the clearest number in the whole comparison. All six apps sell the same thing — a year of unlimited viewing for a subscription price — and the spread runs from $99.99 to $199.99.
| App | Annual price |
|---|---|
| NetShort | $99.99 Cheapest by $20 — about $0.27 a day |
| DramaBox | $119.99 Marketed as "only $2.31/week"; $80 below ReelShort |
| ShortMax | $149.99 Also the only app here with a TV build |
| GoodShort | $149.99 Same annual price as ShortMax; higher weekly price |
| StardustTV | Not published as a yearly tier Weekly tiers only, at $19.99/week |
| ReelShort | $199.99 The most expensive annual price we measured |
Prices checked in-app on 2026-10-09.
Read that bottom to top. ReelShort’s annual pass costs exactly twice NetShort’s for the same unlimited-viewing model — $100 more, which is the single clearest reason to move if you were going to subscribe annually anyway.
Cost per episode, app by app
Annual price only matters if you commit for a year. For finishing one series, per-episode cost is the number that applies, and here the picture changes:
| App | Coins per episode | Cheapest pack | Best rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| DramaBox | 50 | $0.50 | $0.36 |
| GoodShort | 50 | $0.50 | $0.37 |
| StardustTV | 65 | $0.65 | $0.57 |
| ShortMax | 50 | $0.50 | $0.37 |
| ReelShort | 60 | $0.60 | $0.40 |
| NetShort | 98 N coins | Not captured | Steepest of the six |
Two things stand out. Three apps charge fewer coins per episode than ReelShort — 50 against 60 — and their largest packs reach a lower rate than ReelShort’s best. NetShort is the outlier: 98 coins an episode is by far the steepest, though its annual pass is the cheapest, which is only relevant if you subscribe rather than buy coins.
On best-rate arithmetic DramaBox is cheapest at $0.36, with GoodShort and ShortMax tied at $0.37 and ReelShort fourth at $0.40. ReelShort’s largest pack is generous (a 50% bonus on 7,500 coins), but DramaBox’s is larger — 3,500 coins on a cheaper base pack, so it gets further. Our per-episode breakdown works through the arithmetic. The ranking above assumes you buy the largest pack on every app, which is rarely what people actually do.
Free episodes before the paywall
If you are sampling rather than committing, this is what actually decides it. All six were measured on one series each, and the spread is wide:
| App | Free episodes | Ad unlocks per day | Weekly check-in coins |
|---|---|---|---|
| StardustTV | 10 | 2 ads per episode | not measured |
| DramaBox | 11 | 8 | 165 |
| NetShort | 9 | 5 (2 ads each) | not measured |
| GoodShort | 7 | 5 | 320 |
| ShortMax | 6 | 10 | not measured |
| ReelShort | 10–16 | 10 | 375 |
ReelShort is the strongest of the six on the free tier: up to 16 free episodes, 10 ad unlocks a day and a 375-coin check-in week. Nobody else matches it on all three. DramaBox gives a slightly longer opening block on the series we tested but a much smaller coin ladder.
This is the case where ReelShort is genuinely the best app of the six, and switching costs you free episodes, ad unlocks and coins all at once. The case for leaving is about what happens after the paywall.
The five alternatives
Each of these is free to download, so the table below is the fastest way to check the two most likely answers before you read further.
1. NetShort — the cheapest year, by half
$99.99 a year, the lowest annual price in the category — exactly half of ReelShort’s. It also has the most transparent weekly pricing we found: the app shows the same $15.99 intro price in the Top Up page, the new-user popup and the checkout button, so there is no price fog.
The catch is coins: 98 N coins per episode is the steepest rate we measured, and its weekly pass renews at $24.99 — the highest weekly renewal here. Buy the year if you commit; avoid the coins.
2. DramaBox — the cheapest way to finish a series
Subscription-first rather than coin-first, which is the structural reason it wins: about $9.99 for a week covers as many series as you can watch. Its annual pass at $119.99 is $80 below ReelShort.
It is the closest match to ReelShort’s catalogue scale — 16,000+ claimed titles, 100+ new a week — so people switching for volume usually land here. The trade is audio: almost everything is dubbed.
3. GoodShort — best check-in rewards
320 coins a week from daily check-ins, second only to ReelShort, and the coin packs are the cleanest of the six with explicit +5%, +10% and +35% bonus badges. Its annual pass is $149.99.
Two real drawbacks: only 7 free episodes (the shortest opening on the series we tested) and 5 ad unlocks a day, half of ReelShort’s — plus we captured an “Ad unlock failed” message, so even those are unreliable. Its free coins also come through third-party offerwalls.
4. ShortMax — the only one with a TV app
The only app in this comparison that ships television apps. If your main screen is a television, that alone can decide it, because vertical video on a horizontal screen is a format mismatch.
We tested its Android phone build only and have not verified the TV version. Pricing is $19.99 a week or $149.99 a year, with a $12.79 intro for two weeks.
5. StardustTV — the widest free opening
10 free episodes on the series we tested, the widest opening of the six, and 65 coins an episode after that. Its pricing is weekly-only at $19.99 with no published yearly tier, and it runs three inconsistent weekly prices at once ($19.99, $17.99 and a $13.19 coupon popup).
It is the least straightforward of the five to recommend, mainly because the price fog is real. We measured a 40%-off popup whose struck-through base price does not reconcile with any listed tier.
The one thing none of them fix
ReelShort is the only app we tested that films English-language originals. DramaBox, GoodShort, ShortMax, NetShort and StardustTV all carry predominantly dubbed content, and audio quality varies by title.
If English audio is why you watch, switching is a downgrade on the thing you care about. In that case the realistic options are to keep ReelShort, or to cancel and use the free tier, which on ReelShort is the strongest available.
Which one to move to
| If your reason is… | Move to | What you gain |
|---|---|---|
| The annual price | NetShort | $100 a year cheaper |
| Pay-per-episode cost | DramaBox | ~$12–20 less per finished series |
| A bigger catalogue | DramaBox | 16,000+ titles, 100+ new weekly |
| Watching on a television | ShortMax | The only TV build available |
| Maximising free coins | GoodShort | 320-coin check-in week |
| The widest free opening | StardustTV | 10 free episodes |
| English-language audio | Nobody | Stays with ReelShort or stays free |
If money is the driver, the short version is this: NetShort for the year, DramaBox for a few series, and nowhere if it is about the audio.
The full price-by-price comparison is in our cheapest-app ranking, the head-to-head against ReelShort is in ReelShort vs DramaBox, and the closest pair is DramaBox vs GoodShort.
What we could not verify
Android only, October 2026. All six tested through Google Play on an emulator with real billing. iOS pricing is not verified for any of them.
Two apps hide their renewal price. GoodShort’s promo popup ends with “then /w” and nothing after it; StardustTV’s 40%-off popup has a base price that does not reconcile with any listed tier. Both are flagged on their own pages.
One series per app for the free-block counts. None publish the number and all move by title.
NetShort’s coin packs were not captured, so its per-episode rate cannot be stated to the cent the way the others can.
We are not film critics. Content quality is unmeasured here; we are comparing price and structure only.
Bottom line
ReelShort costs twice as much per year as NetShort for the same unlimited model — $199.99 against $99.99 — and its coin-first structure makes finishing one series cost roughly $25–45 where DramaBox’s week costs about $9.99.
So there is a strong case for moving. NetShort if you were going to pay annually, DramaBox if you want the cheapest finished series. What you give up either way is the free tier, which is ReelShort’s genuine strength — up to 16 free episodes, 10 ad unlocks a day and a 375-coin check-in week.
And if your real reason is the dubbing, there is nowhere better to go. ReelShort films its own English originals; the rest of this category does not. In that case the honest options are to stay, or to cancel and use the free tier while it lasts.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest app like ReelShort?
On the annual pass, NetShort at $99.99 a year against ReelShort's $199.99 — half the price, same unlimited model. On cost per finished series, DramaBox at about $9.99 for a week. Those are two different questions with two different winners, and which one matters depends on whether you commit for a year or just want to finish one series.
Is DramaBox a good ReelShort alternative?
It is the cheapest way to finish a series, by a wide margin: one week at $9.99 covers as many series as you can watch, against roughly $25–45 in ReelShort coins for a single series. Its annual pass is also $80 cheaper. The trade is content — DramaBox is almost entirely dubbed, while ReelShort films English-language originals.
Are any ReelShort alternatives free?
All of them give free opening episodes, and none of them let you finish a series. The free blocks we measured ranged from seven episodes on GoodShort to eleven on DramaBox, and the boundary moves by title. Free coins exist too — ReelShort is the strongest at 375 a week from check-ins, GoodShort next at 320.
Why is ReelShort more expensive than the alternatives?
Two reasons we can see in the app data. Its annual pass is $199.99, the highest of the six, and its default purchase shape is coins rather than a subscription, so casual users end up spending more than a weekly pass would have cost. DramaBox is structured the other way round — subscription first — which is the main reason it is cheaper to finish a series there.
Do any of these alternatives have a TV app?
ShortMax is the only one in this comparison that ships television apps. We tested its Android phone build only and have not verified how the TV version behaves. For everything else, vertical video on a horizontal screen is a format mismatch no setting fixes.
