Which Short Drama App Gives You the Most Free Episodes
- StardustTV gave 10 episodes free — the widest opening we measured. NetShort gave 9 on the same series; ReelShort matched 10 on one series but gave 16 on another.
- The headline number matters much less than people assume. Ad-unlocks add up to a further 5 to 10 episodes a day, which is more than any app gives away up front.
- GoodShort and StardustTV are the stingiest with ads — 5 ad-unlocks a day. ReelShort and ShortMax give 10.
- The real differentiator is free coins: ReelShort pays 200 coins for reaching check-in day 7, which covers 3 episodes on its own.
- Every figure here is from one Android account in October 2026, and the free allowance varies by series — two apps gave different numbers on different shows.
What we actually counted
“Most free episodes” sounds like a simple number, and most comparisons get it wrong in one of two ways. They quote the marketing number rather than what the app actually showed us, or they treat the figure as fixed when it moves by series.
So here is what we did. On one Android account, with US Google Play billing, in October 2026, we opened a series on each of six apps, recorded the exact episode where the lock first appeared, and recorded the ad-unlock counter next to it.
| App | Series tested | Episodes | Free boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| StardustTV | The God-King Returns: Too Late to Beg | 50 | EP.1–10 free |
| NetShort | The God-King Returns: Too Late to Beg | 50 | EP.1–9 free |
| ReelShort | two different series | 54 / 81 | 10 free / 16 free |
| DramaBox | Condemn Me, My President | 43 | EP.1–11 free |
| GoodShort | — | — | 7 free |
| ShortMax | — | — | 6 free |
The free episode count on six apps
Taking the opening episode count alone, ranked:
- DramaBox — 11 episodes free before the paywall
- StardustTV — 10 episodes
- NetShort — 9 episodes
- ReelShort — 10 or 16, depending on the series
- GoodShort — 7 episodes
- ShortMax — 6 episodes, the narrowest opening
Six episodes versus eleven is a difference of five episodes. At roughly $0.50 to $0.65 per episode, that gap is about three dollars across a whole series. The free episode count is a weak signal on its own, which is why the next two sections matter more.
Why the same app gives different numbers
The most useful thing we recorded was not a number, it was an inconsistency.
ReelShort gave us 10 free episodes on a 54-episode series and 16 on an 81-episode series. Same app, same day, same account. Longer series gave more free episodes — which means the opening scales with total length, roughly a fifth of the way in.
That has a practical consequence: any app-level claim about free episodes is unreliable. If you are deciding where to start, check the specific series rather than trusting a review that says “ten free episodes”, because you might get sixteen.
Ad-unlocks add up to more than the opening
This is where the “free episode count” question gets reframed. Every app lets you keep going by watching adverts, and the daily limits are large relative to the opening:
| App | Ad-unlocks per day | Ad views needed per episode | Episodes/day from ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| ReelShort | 10 | 1 | 10 |
| ShortMax | 10 | 1 | 10 |
| DramaBox | 8 | 1 | 8 |
| GoodShort | 5 | 1 | 5 |
| StardustTV | 5 | 1 | 5 |
| NetShort | 5 | 2 | 5 (10 ad views) |
NetShort asks for two adverts per episode, and its ad ran a 3-minute countdown — the longest forced advert we saw on any of the six. Five free episodes therefore cost ten ad views. The daily caps also reset rather than accumulate, so unused unlocks do not roll over.
Netlify aside: we also saw ReelShort serve a fake insurance advert on one day and a TikTok install prompt the next. The unlock count is real; the adverts themselves are worth tolerating carefully.
Free coins are the real allowance
The free coin systems are more generous than the free episode counts, and almost nobody uses them properly.
ReelShort, measured across a week:
| Source | Coins |
|---|---|
| First login bonus | 50 |
| Daily check-in, day 7 alone | 200 |
| Full seven-day check-in sequence | ~375 |
| Watch-time tasks (2/5/10/20/30 min tiers) | up to 340/day |
At 60 coins an episode, the day-7 check-in alone pays for more than three episodes. Run the loop for a week and you have roughly 1,000 coins — 16 episodes — before buying anything.
DramaBox runs a shorter seven-day sequence — about 165 coins in total — against a 50-coin episode cost. Under half the coins at a lower per-episode price: the ReelShort check-in still covers roughly twice as many episodes. Where DramaBox does beat ReelShort is the welcome: its one-time sign-up tasks pay 450 coins against 50. See its full free-coin breakdown.
Which app is most generous
If the question is strictly “which app lets me watch the most for free”, the answer changes depending on what you count:
Most free episodes before the paywall: DramaBox (11), then StardustTV (10).
Most free episodes per day from ads: ReelShort and ShortMax (10 each), with one advert each. NetShort needs two adverts per episode, which makes it the most expensive free route in practice.
Most free coins: ReelShort, by a wide margin — 200 coins for check-in day 7, plus up to 340 a day from watch-time tasks.
Worst overall for free viewing: ShortMax and GoodShort. Six and seven free episodes, and only five ad-unlocks a day between them. If you want to avoid paying, they are the two to skip.
Best answer if you only open one app occasionally: any of them, for ten days. Between the opening episodes and the daily ad unlocks, a casual viewer rarely needs to pay at all — which is why the cheapest-app question and this one have different answers.
Free episode counts differ by five across six apps — worth about three dollars. Free coins and ad unlocks differ far more, and those are the numbers that decide whether a casual viewer ever pays. Optimise for coins, not for the opening episode count.
Limits of this comparison
A caveat that applies to every number here: this comparison assumes you are counting free episodes on a specific series on Android with US Google Play billing, and if you are doing anything else the numbers will not transfer to you. The free allowance is not a property of the app — it is a property of the app on a given series. The further limits:
- One account, one region, October 2026. All testing was on Android with US Google Play billing. We have not measured iOS, and at least two of the apps price by the country your traffic exits from.
- The free episode count is per series, not per app. ReelShort gave us 10 on one series and 16 on another, so a second session could produce a different table entirely.
- We tested one series per app for most of them. Only ReelShort was tested on two series, and that is precisely where the inconsistency showed up — so our numbers for the other five are single samples.
- Ad-unlock caps can change without notice. They are set by the app, and we confirmed ReelShort’s 10/day twice on two separate days rather than assuming.
- We did not test whether ad-unlocks can be farmed or reset. The daily caps make repeated attempts pointless, but we only observed the limit.
- The advert quality is part of the real cost. One ReelShort ad was a fake insurance offer; NetShort forced a 3-minute countdown. If that matters to you, the “free” route is not free.
- This is not an endorsement. All six are affiliate-linked on this site. The recommendation to run the daily coin loop before spending anything is the one that earns us the least.
When this comparison does not apply
Put plainly: this ranking does not work as a general rule, because the number it is built on moves per series.
- If you are deciding where to watch a specific series. Free counts move by series and by length. Open the show, count the locks, and decide from that.
- If you are outside the US. These are US-route observations on a US account.
- If you are on iOS. Different billing platform, and we have not measured it.
- If you want to finish a long series. None of these figures gets you past about 20 episodes for free; past that you are buying coins or subscribing.
- If you are reading this months from now. The structure will likely hold — an opening allowance, a daily ad cap that resets, and a coin economy — but the specific numbers will have moved.
- If you care about catalogue size rather than cost. Free episodes are a sample. A 10-episode free opening on a 500-episode library is a different proposition from the same opening on a 40-episode one.
Frequently asked questions
Which short drama app has the most free episodes?
StardustTV gave ten free episodes in our testing and NetShort nine. ReelShort also gave ten on one series but sixteen on another, so its free allowance depends on the show. ShortMax gave six and GoodShort seven, the narrowest openings of the six. Treat these as measured samples rather than fixed rules, because the count varies by series.
Do ads actually let you watch more for free?
More than the opening suggests. ReelShort and ShortMax each allow ten ad-unlocks a day, which is more episodes than some apps give away before the paywall. GoodShort and StardustTV allow only five. NetShort asks for two ads per episode, so five episodes costs ten ad views. We found the advert quality varied, including a fake insurance offer and a TikTok install prompt, so the real cost is your time and your patience.
Are free coins worth chasing in these apps?
More than the free episode count, yes. ReelShort pays 50 coins on first login, a seven-day check-in sequence reaching 200 coins on day 7 and about 375 in total, and up to 340 coins a day from watch-time tasks. At 60 coins an episode, the day-7 check-in alone covers more than three episodes. DramaBox gave a seven-day sequence worth about 165 coins in total.
Can I watch a whole series without paying anything?
A short one, yes, if you use the ad unlocks and daily coins together. A long one, no. A 50-episode series with 10 free plus 5 ad-unlocks a day still needs coins or a subscription once the unlocks run out, and ad-unlock limits reset daily rather than accumulating.
